About RURC

The Kansas City Regional University Research Collective (RURC) strengthens the region’s innovation economy by connecting KU, K-State, and UMKC under a shared framework for innovation-led growth.

Why RURC

The Kansas City region has research strength —
now it needs shared innovation infrastructure.

The region’s universities generate significant research activity. But without shared structure, coordination, and capacity, the region captures only a fraction of that potential as new ventures, industry partnerships, and scalable economic growth. RURC helps the region organize to act.

What RURC is

  • A coordinated framework connecting university capacity with civic and industry systems

  • A shared approach to strengthening commercialization and collaboration

  • A coordinated regional engine that moves research discoveries toward real-world impact

Backbone Coordination

Why KC Digital Drive

The Kansas City region has long recognized the need for a cross-institutional structure that links university research, civic leadership, and regional economic strategy. For more than a decade, regional leaders have called for an entity capable of coordinating innovation work across sectors and state lines.

KC Digital Drive was created to fill this role. Established by the cities of Kansas City, Missouri, and Kansas City, Kansas, KC Digital Drive was intentionally designed as a neutral civic intermediary built to convene partners, coordinate shared work, and mobilize investment across diverse networks including universities, industry, philanthropy, government, and community organizations.

Regional coordination

KC Digital Drive has a track record coordinating large multi-stakeholder initiatives across jurisdictions and sectors, and brings an essential “outside-in” function — connecting the region to national philanthropy, state and federal partners, industry consortia, and investors.

From research to application

KC Digital Drive has operational experience in the “middle layer” where research becomes real-world solutions — managing pilots, demonstrations, and cross-institution innovation programs, and building shared tools and accountability across dozens of partners.

Community-connected capacity

KC Digital Drive works on the ground with community organizations, workforce partners, and residents to ensure innovation efforts remain connected to real users and practical implementation — reinforcing RURC’s emphasis on inclusive prosperity and adoption.

By grounding RURC in KC Digital Drive’s civic architecture, the region builds on a proven model of cross-institution coordination, ready to support a multi-university innovation and commercialization system at scale.
